Comedy of Errors

A picture of the set before the play began

1. Drayton Hall Theather is a proscenium theater, and it can seat up to 440 people. The set began as a puppet show window, and then changed to different places. Some parts of the set reminded me of Romeo and Juliet. There was a French cafe, a belly dancer house, a church, a house, and a balcony. The set changed to a jail towards the end of the play, and back to the other places at the end. All of the balconies and the vines coming down the walls reminded me of Romeo and Juliet. All of the actors and actresses had different color wigs on, which were all bright colors. There was blue, orange, green, pink, purple, and one actor had a rainbow colored wig. The clothes that they wore were also very bright and loud. I noticed that the belly dancers wore belly dancer costumes that were bright colors. The only costumes that did not stand out as much were the nun costumes.

2.  The Comedy of Errors was written by William Shakespeare. He wrote 38 plays and 154 sonnets. Most if his plays were comedies. William Shakespeare lived during the Renaissance Period.

3. The Comedy of Errors begins with two sets of twins, which end up getting mixed up and switched at birth. There is  Antipholus of Syracuse, and his servant Dromio of Syracuse. There is Antipholus of Ephesus and his servant Dromio of Ephesus. Throughout the play, the characters get the brothers mixed up with each other since they are all identical twins. Adriana mistakes Antipholus from Syracuse for her husband and does not realize until the end of the play that she was talking to the wrong man. Her sister, Luciana, falls for Antipholus from Syracuse, and tries hiding it from her sister until she realized at the end that it wasn't her sister's husband after all. Each servant gets mistaken for the wrong one, and they both get beaten for no reason. The entire play was full of 'errors' and I can see why it is called The Comedy of Errors. At the end, everyone is revealed as their true selves and all of the characters realize that they had everyone mixed up. Each Dromio realizes that they have an identical twin brother, and the same with Antipholus.

Opera Art Event

Describe:

"The Phantom of the Opera" was originally a novel written by Gaston Leroux in the early 1900s. Since then, the novel has been turned into many movies and stage productions. The version that we watched is the 2004 film version, directed by Joel Schumacher. The writers of this version are Gaston Leroux and Andrew Lloyd Webber. This film could be classified as a drama, a musical, a romance, and a thriller.  Gerard Butler plays the phantom, and Emmy Rossum plays Christine. It was produced by Warner Brothers Pictures, and was filmed in London, England. The run time is 143 minutes.

Analyze:

The reason that the film can be classified in so many ways is because of the storyline. It is definitely a drama because of the events between Christine, Raoul, and the phantom. It could be described as a "love triangle" because Christine falls in love with Raoul, who she knows from her childhood, but the phantom is in love with her because he has given her the beautiful operatic voice that she has. She was told by her father before he passed away that an angel would be sent to her. The phantom is the angel that blessed her with the beautiful voice and he falls in love with her from spending time coaching her and singing with her. I felt that each main character was so realistic, it was hard to believe that what I was watching was not real! Christine shows toward the end that she is really confused about who she wants to marry and struggles with the issue throughout the movie. Raoul is shown to be the hero and the 'perfect mate' for Christine. The phantom is portrayed as an obsessive character, who will do anything to have Christine for himself. The actors and actresses in this movie had beautiful, operatic voices, as well as great acting skills. The way that the film was put together was definitely made to capture the audience's attention.

Interpret:

I felt that the film was full of emotions based on the skill of the actors and actresses. It seems that the writers of the film want the audience to stay on the edge of their seat the entire time. Although the film is an opera, the storyline was what kept me interested in watching the film. The songs were absolutely perfect for each scene, with songs about love, deceit, and emotions. I could feel my moods changing with every turn of the story! For example I would feel sad when the phantom was heartbroken, scared when he was mad, happy when Christin and Raoul were together, and anxious about what was going to happen in the end. Although it is a long film, I was anxious for the end because I could not wait to find out what the outcome would be between Christine, Raoul, and the phantom. I had no clue who was going to be together at the end, and was happy and surprised by the ending.

Evaluate:

I really enjoyed watching this film. I have never been interested in watching operas but this film definitely opened my eyes. The storyline combined with the beautiful music is what captured me from the beginning. I felt that the three main characters were all so different but they all came together nicely in the end. It was amazing to see the way my emotions were changing based on what was going on in the story.

Assignment #8

1. Opera is a form of art that includes all of the performing arts (music, theater, and dance). Most of the time there is an orchestra present, and operas are performed in buildings called opera houses. Opera is often seen as something that people either love or hate, and the audience is usually described as snooty and overdressed. It is also said that people that enjoy opera look down on the other performing arts. Another thing that has changed is that today people may attend pre-performance lectures so that will have an understanding of what the opera is about. However, people that attend operas today dress comfortably.  Light opera is a less demanding form of opera and includes spoken words; however, light opera still has an orchestra and opera singers.Musical theater includes music and dialogue and is less demanding of performers' singing voices.

2. People are not born with an operatic voice, and usually do not acquire their peak performing operatic voice until they are 30 years old!

3. "Madame Butterfly" is an opera by Puccini that premiered in 1904 in Milan, Italy. It began as a two act opera, but it is now three acts long. The first time that it premiered was in February 1904, and it was not very successful. However, Puccini decided to revise it and it premiered again in May of 1904, and was a huge success. Puccini based this opera on "Madame Butterfly", a short story by John Luther Long. People say that it is also based on events that were occurring during the 1890s in Nagasaki, Japan.

Assignment #7

1. A thrust stage extends into the audience on three sides. The audience can see three out of four sides of the acting. The thrust stage makes it difficult to change sets. A proscenium stage or 'proscenium arch', has a big opening or arch, and it looks as if the audience is 'spying on the actors'. The actors and actresses stand 'in front of the scenery'.

3. A scrim is a piece of fabric used in theater to create special effects. I have seen scrim used at concerts to show the shadow of an artist before they come on stage. It is a great way to get the audience excited and ready for the show to start! I have also seen scrim used in a play, The Glass Menagerie.

1. While shagging, the dancers count to six. One and two, three and four, five, six. The first two steps are triple steps, followed by a rocking motion step. The male or lead starts on the left foot, and the female starts on the right foot.

2. The Big Apple building is a former Jewish synagogue. It was named the House of Peace Synagogue in 1907, when it was still the synagogue. Once it was no longer used as a synagogue, it became the Big Apple Club. While it was the Big Apple Club, it was an African American dance club. The inside has a dome in the top, with a stained glass image with the star of David in the center.Today it is just called the Big Apple, and is now a part of the Historic Columbia Association. Some people use it for weddings today. The front of the building reminds me of the Greek Revival style because it has two columns on the front, held up by the post and lentil design. The roof meets together at one point, which also reminds me of the Greek Revival style.

3.  The Carolina shag came from the Charleston dance and originated in the 1930s in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Although it is the state dance of North and South Carolina, it first began in South Carolina. The Carolina shag is more about the movement of the feet instead of the movement of the hips. It is usually danced to beach music, and only consists of six steps. The Carolina shag became our state dance in 1984, many years after people began dancing the Carolina shag.

The photograph above is the one that stood out to me the most. It was so interesting to look at and read about. Michael Jackson is one of my all time favorite musicians and this image is the perfect way for him to be remembered. One reason why it was so noticeable is because of the size. It is an 8' by 6' photograph! No one could have missed it! At first glance, you can tell that it's not just one image, but instead it is hundreds of images. Albert Watson took the hundreds of images displayed, and turned them into one big photograph. The images were taken in 1999 in New York City, but were not printed until 2000. While reading, I noticed that the process used to create the photograph is called chromogenic print. Chromogenic print is a process in which a 'silver image is formed and is then replaced with a colored dye image'.

This photograph is simply about the way that Michael Jackson moves his body when he dances and performs. The photographer used eight mirrors to snap hundreds of photographs of Michael Jackson. He then layered the pictures in an organized way. An interesting fact that I read about the photograph while at the museum is that these images were taken in order to decide a cover image for the Invincible album. However, for some reason it did not get used for the album cover. Instead it became one gigantic image of images! I feel that this photograph reveals Michael Jackson's life perfectly. The clothes that he is wearing is that of stylish, rocker/pop star type clothes. He was always known for his style. The images capture every possible way that he moves his body, and we was also known for the way that he danced. When I think about the history of Michael Jackson, I think about the way that he used music and dancing to express himself. It is obvious, from this photograph, that the photographer wanted to capture this aspect of Michael Jackson and show it off in an interesting way. I do not think I will ever forget this photograph!

Assignment #6

During the baroque period (1600-1750), not only dance,  but art, music, and architecture began to flourish. The baroque period was all about dynamic movement and overt emotion. Many would call the arts in the baroque period the "overdone stuff". The costumes that dancers wore during this period were very detailed. Women did not become prima dancers until the 1700s. The following picture shows an example of the types of costumes that were worn by dancers during the baroque period. The costumes were changed in the classical period so that the audience could see the dancers' ankles better.

There are a number of reasons why people dance. When I was a child I danced tap and ballet for fun. Many people start out dancing for fun at a young age and it becomes an interest or hobby of theirs. Dance is seen to many people as a form of representation as well as a way of expression. Today there are dance classes that people take for fitness or to get in better shape. Couples may also take dance classes together as a way to spend quality time with each other. Dancing has become expected at weddings and today some people even choreograph dances for their wedding ceremonies or receptions! There are plenty of different reasons why people dance. The following is a picture of a zumba class. Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance that people do for fitness. It is offered at many gyms today.

In class we learned about several kinds of non-western dance. The first one we discussed is called Butoh dance, which derived from Japan in 1959. It is also known as "a dance of the dark soul", which is obvious in the music and movements that we watched in class. Folk or ethnic dances come from a variety of different places and have their own ethnic costumes, music, and movement. We learned about folk and ethnic dances like belly dancing, river dancing, Irish dancing, square dancing, American Indian, and Zulu Warrior dancing. We watched a video of a kathakali dance, which comes from southern India. The costumes, especially the masks, are interesting to look at and each hand movement has a different meaning. The image below is a picture of Chinese folk dancers.

Film Art Event

I went to see Made in Dagenham at the Nickelodeon theater. It was a very interesting movie about women going on strike for equal pay in the late 1960s/early 1970s. The establishing shot was the image of women riding on bicycles to work. The establishing shot made the time period obvious by the style of bicycles and the way the women were dressed. The most unique camera angle that I noticed was a scene with the main character and her husband on the staircase in their apartment building. It was a view from the ground up and it seemed as if the camera person as laying on the ground and looking up at the staircase. I thought it was really neat and wonder if the camera person was laying on the ground. It was definitely a low-angle shot. The story line of the film definitely moved me as a woman. It made me feel proud to be a woman and even more proud that women now have equal pay because of one woman standing up for the rest of us. The scene that moved me the most was when she went to Ford headquarters and instead of looking down and not speaking like she was told to do, she spoke up and made a point that the women that were machinists were very skilled and deserved to be payed the same amount as men. It was incredible to see and hear her explaining all of these things to the men in charge of Ford. The main character, (real name Sally Hawkins) did a fantastic job portraying her character. She was very convincing from the way she expressed her emotions to her body language. All of the women that she worked with in the factory portrayed their roles well. They were very convincing that they were unhappy in their working conditions. The soundtrack was appropriate for the movie. Each song set the mood for the particular scene. Made in Dagenham is a combination between history and drama. It is based on history and the events in the movie are real and dramatic. Not only did I learn about the events when women went on strike for equal pay, but I learned about the working conditions they were faced with as well as the hardships. I learned about the events in detail from watching the movie.

1. Jazz music came about in the early 1900s, and still exists today. It was created first my African Americans, but now there are people of all races that are jazz musicians. It usually includes popular melodies and a swinging rhythm. People may also think about call-and-response when they think about jazz music. The first person that came to mind when I heard jazz music is Louis Armstrong. He not only played the trumpet, but he was famous for singing. My favorite song, and perhaps the most popular is "What A Wonderful World". You can really hear the instruments most commonly associated with jazz music.

2. Peter and the Wolf has a different instrument for every character. Peter is the main character and he is represented by the string instruments such as the violin, viola, etc. I think he is represented by strings because he seems to have a positive outlook and these instruments have a happy, positive sound. The bird is represented by a flute and I think the reason is because it almost sounds like a bird's chirp. The duck is represented by an oboe. The wolf is represented by the French horn, and the hunters by the timpani. The reason is because they are the dangerous characters, and these instruments represent deep or dangerous sounds. Grandpa is represented by the bassoon.

3. Classical music is in the time period of the mid 1700s-the early 1800s. The most common musicians in this time include Mozart and Beethoven. When I think of classical music I think about doing my homework. Teachers at my elementary school used to play classical music while we worked independently in class.

Assignment #4

The building in these pictures is the Children's Center at USC located on Wheat Street. The columns on the front of the building are doric columns. They have a flat top and a flat base. A difference between the columns on this building versus the columns that we looked at in class is that there are no lines or indents in the columns, they are flat and round all the way around. Although this building is fairly new, it is definitely a Greek Revival style building. The way the roof meets at a point and looks like a triangle and the columns on the front are definitely characteristics of the Greek Revival buildings. The front of it reminds me of our State House building and the Longstreet Theater building. The front part of the building with the columns is definitely post and lintel in the way that the columns support the top of the overhang or carport. Overall, I learned that many buildings on campus, such as the State House or the Longstreet Theater, have the Greek Revival style architecture, even the newer buildings on campus like the Children's Center at USC. The Greek Revival style is still popular today.

Assignment #3

1.         Every night I straighten my hair. I use exactly two flat irons, one that is wide and one that is skinny. I also use a hairbrush to brush out the tangled sections of curls. I begin by placing the curls in between the bronze colored plates of the skinny flat iron. As I glide the blazing flat iron over the curls, the section becomes as straight as an arrow. The radiant colors in all of the strands begin to glow. What once looked like a head full of snakes slithering all around now looks like a head full of beautiful, red pine straw. As the steaming locks fall on my neck, I feel warm as if the sun is beating down on my skin on a summer day. When all of the newly straightened strands come together as one, I feel that I am ready to begin my day.
Head full of snakes.
Head full of pine straw.

2.         While listening to “Nessum Dorma”, I felt that there was sadness as well as passion being expressed in the song. The red and purple lines that I drew show the passion that I felt, with the thicker part of the lines showing strong feelings, and the thinner parts showing weaker feelings. The blue line stands out because it is the thickest line on the paper. The reason it is so thick is because he seemed to accentuate sadness at times and gradually fade of sadness. This explains the shape of the blue line. The yellow line is a sign of hope and bright feelings, which he also seemed to express strong and times and weak other times. The green and gray lines have interesting shapes, almost like mountains. These lines are simply formed by the way his voice gets loud and soft. I felt happiness, hope, passion, and sadness in the song and I expressed it in the shapes and colors of the lines that I drew.

3.         The establishing shot in a movie is perhaps the most important shot in a movie. The purpose is to tell the audience the setting of the film. The establishing shot may show a view of a city where everything is taking place. The audience can gather information about the weather and other parts of the setting from the establishing shot. I feel that establishing shot also captures the audience’s attention as soon as it shows up on the screen.

Assignment #2

The picture on this post is a picture that I painted in another art class with Dr. Heid. It took me several times before I was ready for it to be shown to the class. I feel that I used all 4 domains of creativity, especially elaboration. I kept thinking of ideas and ways to improve the piece until I felt that it was ready.

Describe the 4 domains of creativity:

Fluency:
Fluency in art is defined as generating many ideas. You can see the fluency in a piece of art by looking at the consistency of things you see. It is obvious when a work of art has fluency because it seems balanced at every angle.
Flexibility:
Flexibility is generating different types of ideas.  Artwork that has flexibility may also feel balanced, but also shows a great deal of different ideas. It may not be as consistent because of the fact that it is supposed to be flexible.
Originality:
Originality can be described as generating unusual ideas. When viewing different works of art, it is easy to pick out a piece that seems completely original. These works of art may stand out because they seem strange or unusual. Just like the book If by Sarah Perry. This book can be seen under the category of originality because it creates ideas that seem very different and very unusual. Art can be seen in the same way when images are shown that do not seem 'normal'.
Elaboration:
Elaboration is defined as adding ideas to improve them. You may be able to tell the use of elaboration in a work of art if it seems that there is a lot of detail. An artist can elaborate on a piece of work many times until they feel that it is finished and ready to be seen by other people. A work of art can change drastically by the artist adding more and more details or having new ideas about what to do next to the piece of work.

Describe the Feldman Method of Art Criticism:

Describe:
The first step in the Feldman Method of Art Criticism is describe. In order to describe a work of art, one must look at the art and answer general questions about what they see when they first look at the work. For example, they might ask simple questions such as: Who is the artist? How big is the work of art? How big is the stage? What kind of stage is it? What kinds of materials were used to create the art? or What is the medium? All of the answers to these questions can be answered from the person describing the work of art that they see.
Analyze:
Analyzing a work of art takes more concentration than describing the art. This where the person viewing must think about the elements and principles of art. Instead of looking at what is used to create the art or looking at what you see at first glance, you must think about what you see and how colors and other elements are related. There are also questions that can answered to help analyze art. How do the colors relate? Do the forms create an overall mood?
Interpret:
Interpreting a work of art is interesting because it is all about the opinion of the person viewing the art. Every person has a different idea about the meaning of what they see. There is no right or wrong way to interpret art, which is comforting to know. Some questions someone may answer when interpreting include: What does it mean? Does it have a social meaning? What kind of feeling does it give you?
Judge or Evaluate
Judging or evaluating art may be the simplest step in the Feldman Method. This step is all about where the person liked the work of art or not and why. There must be a reason or multiple reasons why someone likes art or does not like art. The person should take the time to think about why they do or do not like the piece. It may be the feeling or mood that they feel from the art. It may be the colors used or the overall scene in a picture or play. Overall, judging or evaluating the work of art will help the audience understand their reasoning behind whether or not they enjoy the work of art.

Assignment #1- Biographical Statement

Consider:

§         Have you ever made art? What kind of art do you like? I have made sculptures, drawings, and paintings before. I love looking at photography and paintings. Photographs are interesting to look at for me because they capture a moment that can not be taken back.
§         Have you ever made a drawing? A painting? A sculpture?  I have made all of them but I really enjoy painting and drawing the best. I feel that I express myself the best through drawings and paintings.
§         When was the last time you went to a museum? Gallery? Artist studio?I have been to different kinds of museums such as the state museum, the Holocaust Museum and the Smithsonian. However, I have never been to a gallery or an artist studio.
§         Have you ever been to a play? Opera? Art Film? Do you dance? I have been to many plays. I have never been to an art film or opera.  I would love to go to both. I dance for fun! When I was younger I took ballet and tap classes.
§         Under what conditions do you learn the most?I learn the best from visuals and hearing the information. I also learn by hands-on and first-hand experiences.
§         Why are you taking this class? Although it is a requirement for my major, I took another art class with Dr. Heid and really enjoyed it! I think this class will give me an understanding of the different kinds of art and help me learn to appreciate each type.
§         Has any of the arts ever moved you in any way? How? Music and movies have definitely moved me. Movies and music can both be inspirational but in different ways. In order to be moved by music you have to listen closely to the words, and many times interpret what the artist is trying to say through the lyrics. Movies can move you if you listen to the actors and actresses, as well as watch what goes on and look for things between the lines.
§         What inspires you? Children inspire me everyday. Children seem to always put me in a positive mood and make me smile when I am having a bad day. They always find a way to laugh and that inspires me to be the same way.
§         What is art?Art includes artwork, music, movies, photography, etc. Art is a way of expressing yourself in ways that you do them best.
§         Do you consider movies art? Music? Video games? Comics? Television? I consider all of them art. Each one includes different forms of art. For example, movies and television involve acting which is definitely a form of art. Music is a form of art because of the performance that is involved. Comics and video games are also art because they involve drawings.
§         Who decided what is good art? How do they know? I believe that the artist decides what is good art. The person admiring the art also decides what is good to them based on what they like.
§         When you debate music or movies with your friends, what critical elements or standards do you hold them to?The element of music that I believe is the most important is the lyrics. The words in a song can move a person completely. The element of a movie that I feel is most important is the plot of the movie. This determines whether or not I am going to watch the movie as well as if it is something that is going to keep my interest or not.
§         What was the best movie of last year? The best movie that I saw in 2010 was The Blind Side. I feel that it was the best movie because it was very inspirational and captured my attention from the very beginning.
§         What is an “Art Film”?I am actually not sure what an art film is but would like to learn!
§         What CD or MP3 is in your player? A mixed CD with all kinds of music. Most of the music is country with a few 80s songs. I listen to all kinds of music everyday.
